Landscaping

Housing at Baxter though dense, seems appropriate to setting and is interspersed with green spaces and much landscaping.
The house is finally to the stage where I can start seriously contemplating the landscaping. Obviously, with almost six acres I have my work cut out for me. I walked our property line yesterday, and discovered that we have a lot larger portion on the other side of the creek than I have first thought. At least an acre is over there. For those who aren’t sitting here and/or can’t read my mind, we own 5.66 narrow acres. Our borders are the road, and Sutter Creek (the creek, which runs through the town…with the same name, not confusing at all). The distance from the road to creek can run anywhere from a foot to about 500 feet. About a hundred years ago (I am not exaggerating, it really was) the property line was drawn with the middle of the creek as the border. As the years passed the creek wandered but the line stays put, so now we have land on the other side. The creek is seasonal, during the summer we can freely walk acrossed and during the rest of the year we need a walking bridge. I cannot wait until to get ours installed in the next few years.
Back to the landscaping.
Here are some of the plants I am eyeing from .
I decided to mock up our house in Illustrator based on the satellite view from Google Maps so I could change up the yard a bit. It may be a little busy, but I think it would be a fun yard to play in. I also added a nice little chimney to huddle around during the colder months. It looks like I still don’t have patio furniture though.

What is up with those ugly marigolds at the bottom of the hill?

Despite my home being a little on the small side (only 1200 sq. ft.), I actually have a very nice sized yard. The seller was kind enough to leave me a lawnmower; however, I am not excited about mowing the lawn. My plan is to do as much landscaping as possible to cutdown on the amount of grass I have to mow. My mother plans to get started this weekend.
Following are some images from that really inspire me. I love the use of cement in their landscaping.

I rode the fixed gear today, yep that is right, after almost two years of not riding my bicycle, I rode it. It was only 3 miles, and it was colder than a well diggers ass, and I did not have proper riding shorts but hey I RODE MY BICYCLE.
I used to ride everyday and bicycles were a major part of my life, then I moved to Georgia, and well Georgia and my job killed my bicycle riding. San Antonio has the perfect terrain for riding, but the worst roads and drivers but damn it, I don't care, I am riding my bicycle again. Slowly at first, just three miles a day until I get proper clothing again. FIXEDGEARFIEND IS BACK!!!!
Now that is out of the system, on to what this post is titled about. I am starting to landscape the yard. I need to draw it out and plan the flowerbeds and where grass and plants will be. We hope to do some texas native xeriscapeing. Today though is full of cleaning the yard. Our backyard has nothing but dirt and a few weeds, oh and tons and tons of pecans and dead leaves and twigs. We are starting the cleaning process by just raking and bagging up everything.
Also with the landscaping is trying to get a nice wood privacy fence put around our backyard and having the ugly chainlink fence removed. Right now everyone is quoting us way to much, 5000 or 4500 and they are not willing to work with us on the materials to get the cost down. We are currently waiting on a quote from the lowes fencing people, lowes is letting us pick whatever materials we want and that is sure to bring the price down.
We have so much work to do it is so overwhelming, I have never had to plan something like this and it is going to be a huge learning process.
Update later I hope.
Well spring is in the air or I should say in the area of central Oklahoma where I build new homes. Some of you may have snow on the ground but you know spring is not to far away. With this time of year it makes ones thoughts turn to the outdoors and specifically a landscaping project that you have had in mind all winter. Landscaping can have a large impact on the appearance of your house. Sometimes the only difference in having it done professionally and doing it yourself can be performance and speed of which the job might get done. Thinking from the point of saving money may or may not be the right way to look at it after all if the job does not look right and enhance your home what good is it any way right? Sodding a yard, planting trees, and building flower beds is no doubt back breaking and tiring work but certainly doable. Sodding a new yard it is very important to get the ground level and the drainage correct and then lay your new sod in. In my experience of building new homes, especially if a client puts in a sprinkler system, you will always have some ditch settling so make sure your ditched are compacted as well as you can. This will minimize the amount of leveling you do after your sod is installed. If you are going to plant trees make sure you know what kind of trees are best suited for your climate and what time of year is best to plant them and how much water is needed to get them started. Building a flower bed area can be as simple as using a steel edging to separate your bed from your sod area to as elaborate as brick or stone walls. Many clients that we have like to have these bed area incorporated into the building process so that the materials can match their house, but you can also use decorative concrete blocks for a very nice look. Talk to the people at your local nursery as they will be able to give you some pointers on what type of plants will work well in your bed areas, depending on soil type and sun light exposure among the things to take into consideration. So if you are going to take on a landscaping project make sure you do your homework, because after all a shoddy landscape job in my opinion is worse than no landscaping at all.
