Going Green
Ok, if anyone reading this knows me really well the topic of this post is the complete opposite of me! For many years I have boycotted things like save a tree, recycling, hybrids, etc. For some reason the last few months I have really changed my thinking on all of this. You might wonder what changed in my life to make this happen. Well it is pretty simple...free mulch! I know that sounds really silly but let me tell the story here. Our new house has hardly any landscaping. We started going on walks in the evening around our neighborhood to start meeting some neighbors and to drain energy out of our kids. In the process I would get so mad! Every house we walked by had a perfect yard and perfect landscaping. Our yard was dead and we have like 5 little shrubs in front of our house. I found this quite embarrassing. My quest started to improve our yard. I got this grand plan that we were going to make some new flower beds extending into our front yard and then wrapping around the house. I made a plan for this and started to price things out (I always have to have a budget and drawings etc). Anyway I started to get some prices on mulch. To my dismay it was going to cost over $1,000 to get mulch! I remembered a while back when we took a bunch of trash to the landfill that there was free mulch there. I was somewhat skeptical of this thinking that they ground all of our trash to make mulch. Last week I took a drive to the landfill to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised that it actually looked like real mulch! So problem solved. I borrowed a friends truck and yesterday we put down almost 4 truckloads of mulch around the house! I decided not to do much in the back yard because since we saved so much money on mulch we can actually attempt to put in a patio! Now I am looking at other ways to go green. While putting the mulch down I was thinking it is actually pretty cool that the landfill grinds up all of the trees and lumber to make mulch. Our next thing we are looking at is one of those in house compost machines. I know that seems a bit drastic but hey why not!
If it hadn't started pouring down rain at about 4pm yesterday I would have posted pictures. I will have to save that for another post. Stay tuned!
